TrophiesWe understand that teams are always concerned about qualified judges and having an appropriate scoresheet that will fit their style. We go through many means to ensure that our scoring and judges are well qualified for the Boston Bhangra Competition. However, for the peace and mind of our teams we have provided information on our scoresheet and our judges qualifications below.

Below is the criterion that we look for from our teams, along with points allocated for each criteria item. This is not the final scoresheet, rather a reference for your team for what Boston Bhangra judges look for:

Judges

We are currently evaluating judges. We will post this information once we have determined who the judges will be for Boston Bhangra 2013. If you, or somebody you know may want to be a judge, please contact us.

Below is a listing of our judges and their credentials in Bhangra:

Jaspal Singh

Jaspal Singh is a Vedic and Punjab scholar. He has judged many Bhangra competitions over this tenure. He was the founding member of Bhagat Singh Cultural Club in Boston, and taught Dhol and Bhangra to many youngsters in the late seventies at MIT. He is a regular contributor to South Asian Review, Wichaar and Eh Din. His work takes him to India and England for extended periods of time where he interacts with poets, artists and other scholars from Punjab and other parts of South Asia. He is currently working on a book on Punjabi Darshan, tracing the genesis of Punjabi thought. He is a member of the Academy of Punjab in North America.

KD Singh

A software engineer by profession, this judge has years of experience performing and judging both traditional and fusion styles of Bhangra. He started performing at the age of 13. He was actively involved in Bhangra at school, where he participated in three Republic Day parades. He captained the Bhangra team from Sri Gobind Singh College of Commerce (Delhi) that won various inter-collegiate competitions and ranked twice at annual All India Folk Dance Competition in Punjab. After coming to the US, he became an integral part of Boston Bhangra which became one of top teams in the US Bhangra circuit. He retired from competing in 2006 and presently lives with his wife in MA.

Megha Kalia

Ms. Megha Kalia first introduced Bhangra in 2002 to the students/local communities around Greater Lafayette, Indiana. Trained in Bhangra from the Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and Kalehri Arts in Mansa, Punjab, Megha moved to New York City in 2006, and regained her quest for voluntarily parting education in Bhangra dance with NYC Bhangra (a dance school and company founded by her). Megha Kalia has led over 120 dancers in NYC Bhangra with over 300 performances including invitations to the UN, NY Times Travel Show, and the auditions for ‘Americas Got Talent’ show. She recently started another dance school called Sitarrey Performing Arts Center in Jersey City, specialized in teaching various Indian dance forms.

Raghu Bajwa

This judge is currently a physician by profession but is a dancer by heart. Being Punjabi she started learning and performingGidha and Bhangra from very early childhood. She started teaching and choreographing Bhangra and Gidha almost 13 years ago in Connecticut. Her teams participated in competitions and won many awards. She is also involved in organizing many shows and has judging experience. Dance to her is an art. Not only are Bhangra and Gidha in her blood but she also received a Bachelors degree in Kathak Classical dance and learned ballroom and Latin dances while competing many times in the New England area. Being a youth coordinator, she recently won an award from Mayor Eddie Perez for her involvement in the youth category.
